Thinking About Creative and Unique Costumes to Recreate Yourself This Halloween
Halloween is perhaps one of the most intriguing and inventive times of year. It’s a time where you can really be whatever and whoever you want to be. As glamorous, as beautiful, as bizarre. As ugly, as scary, as fantastical. You can recreate yourself and become a version of any character you like. A successful costume comes from just that, a deliberate “version of”. One that brings your personality or your desires to fruition. It will utilize that certain something that attracts you to the base character of your choice in the first place.
Once upon a time, Halloween costumes were a bit different than they are today. But for the most part, we are going back to our roots, where home made reinvention was the thing. Spook or go home empty handed. And of course masks were a must.
Few and far between are costume rental shops that carried the luxurious and costumes that were perfect for masquerading. Costume shops have been taken over by Halloween super stores and generic commercial costumes. Sure Halloween stores are bigger and better than ever, but prices are bigger too, for the good stuff. And are you sure your costume is going to be oh so unique? Not really. And if you’re lucky enough to find the perfect mask that doesn’t strangle you with its synthetic smell, you’re more than likely not going to be allowed to wear it around in public like you used to be able to, just like so many of life’s little freedoms.
Good news is, unique reinvention is on the rise. Walk through any not for profit boutique, or clothing consignment shop, and you’ll find many choosing to piece together their own creations. Halloween is going to be a mystical celebration this year and in the years to come.
How to Make Your Costume Successful
Think of yourself as a mannequin. There is no design that you cannot create on the blank canvas that is your body. Think art. Think couture. Think color and texture, shapeless and ethereal, surreal. Use dreams, feelings, what you know, what you don’t know. Create the impossible when recreating yourself.
Use makeup and embellishments in new ways to create a “mask” that is stunning. Think monotone for a look that keeps others looking. Take your time. Be deliberate.
Use a bit of something that is recognizable and turn it into something that is unrecognizable yet visually stimulating, fresh, unique.
Happy creating and Happy Halloween.
