The Beautiful Vintage Hamper
There comes a point in everyone’s life when one must do their own laundry. Simple as that. You may go to a laundry mat, you may take your clothing to the dry cleaners, you may have a laundry room of your very own. Any way you look at it, it’s not necessarily something you look forward to, unless of course you’ve just bought your very own beautiful, shiny, new washing machine and dryer set.
Laundry is a process that starts well before the actual washing. It all begins with the buying and wearing of an outfit that spoke to you.
If you’re like me, it’s the quality of the clothing that matters, not the quantity. I want to feel beautiful, soft, and pleasing to the eye. I want the loveliness of my clothes whether I’m wearing them or not. These things are important to me, whether they are my yoga pants and tank tops, or my most favourite out on the town dress.
Beautiful clothes are not something to take for granted, so every moment that your clothes live with you, they should be treated with the same respect and appreciation as you would give to yourself.
While some pile their laundry in a haphazard spot, and others like to use plastic laundry baskets, I find that there is something lacking in this concept mentally and emotionally for me. The hamper you choose to use ought to reflect the love you feel for your clothing. If your clothes have lost that loving feeling, then yes, perhaps it’s time to donate them and get a new set. Or… you could simply get a new laundry basket. A cheaper and wiser choice, a choice that just may put some respect back into how we perceive our clothes.
While modern times have taken us away from the elegance of handmade beauty, it has also brought back appreciation for the vintage, the classics. The lovely Pottery Barn Vintage style French Wire Hamper (shown above), a simple and elegant part of their Bed and Bath collections, comes from that appreciation.
